ÅAC Microtec awarded a grant to demonstrate groundbreaking technology for space data downlink optimization

ÅAC Microtec AB ÅAC Microtec AB (publ.) receives 1.4 million SEK from the Swedish National Space Board to continue development of the patent pending Bluestone technology.

Bluestone is an image data management technology that addresses the challenges associated with retrieving the exponentially growing volumes of data generated by earth observation from space (for example images). Today this data represents more than half of all data generated in space. Bluestone optimizes the use of bandwidth between the orbiting sensors and the ground by allowing the user to select and retrieve only the interesting and most valuable image data.

Bluestone provides a market entry opportunity to the rapidly expanding earth observation payload data processing market and consolidates ÅAC Microtec's presence as a leading provider of space technologies.

  • Bluestone has the potential to disrupt earth observation and we are excited to leverage our capabilities and heritage in space avionics in this ground breaking technology, says Emil Vinterhav, CTO of ÅAC Microtec AB.
  • Bluestone is a paradigm shift in the industry, says Mikael Stern, CEO of Spacemetric, making smarter use of existing bandwidth to enhance services while reducing costs.

The funding from the Swedish National Space Board enables ÅAC Microtec, together with Spacemetric, to develop a pre-commercial Bluestone demonstrator. The demonstrator is an important milestone in introducing Bluestone to the satellite market as a product for payload data downlink optimization and is planned to be completed during the third quarter of 2018.
